Emergency and future planning

Make the important information easier to find before it is urgent.

A simple plan can help another person step in safely if you are delayed, unwell or unable to provide care. You do not need to solve every possible emergency at once.

Your emergency plan

  • Who you support and how to communicate with them.
  • Essential routines, medication and health information.
  • Who can step in and what they have agreed to do.
  • Key professionals, services and pharmacy details.
  • What must happen in the first few hours and what can wait.

Talk to the people involved

Ask potential emergency contacts for their agreement. Explain any tasks that need skill or confidence, and do not assume someone can provide personal care or medication support without preparation.

Plan for longer-term change

You may also want to discuss lasting power of attorney, future care preferences, housing, finances and what would happen if your caring role changed permanently. Get specialist legal or financial advice where needed.
