Time away from caring

A break should fit your life and the person you support.

Breaks are not one-size-fits-all. The right option might be help at home, a regular activity, a short stay, practical assistance or protected time for work, rest and relationships.

Start with the outcome

Think about what the break needs to make possible: sleep, an appointment, seeing friends, continuing work, exercise, time with family or simply not being responsible for a while.

Explore the practical options

  • Support from family, friends or a trusted community network.
  • Sitting or replacement-care services.
  • Day opportunities, short breaks or activities for the person you support.
  • Technology, equipment or home adaptations that reduce repeated tasks.
  • Financial help identified through a carer’s assessment or benefits check.

Plan for confidence

Share routines, communication needs, medication information and emergency contacts with anyone providing cover. Begin with a short, low-pressure trial if either of you feels anxious.
